The club have a proud track record of providing players for Germany and made their preference known to midfielder Musiala as he weighed up his international future.

On Wednesday, he confirmed the move that Bayern chiefs had wanted by pledging his future to the country of his birth, and not England – despite saying he has an ‘English heart’ and starring for the youth ranks.

The forward has played for England at Under 17 and Under 21 level and has long been considered English.

For example, he was widely said to have become the ‘youngest Englishman’ to score in the Champions League when he struck in Bayern’s 4-1 win over Lazio on Tuesday night.

But going forward, Musiala will be making history in the German national team.

The FA are hopeful of winning another tug-of-war by persuading Valencia star Yunus Musah, 18, to pick England over the USA.

The former Arsenal winger turned out for England youth teams but has featured twice for the US senior side. But both were friendlies, meaning he can switch.
