‘Banner 18 or die trying’: Brad Stevens’ massive challenge with Celtics in replacing Danny Ainge


New Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens had a good answer when was asked why, in the wake of Danny Ainge’s retirement Wednesday, he was not going to take on the Gregg Popovich dual role of head coach while running the franchise.

Minutes after Ainge explained how his heart attack two years ago prompted his family to beg him to retire, Stevens, sitting right next to him, simply said: “It’s just too much.”

It could just as easily describe the season which ended 12 hours earlier. It could just as easily describe the task ahead of him to reshape what is now unequivocally his team, starting with hiring his replacement as head coach.
