Authentic Breezes Six Furlongs In 1:12.40 For Santa Anita Derby

Authentic and jockey Drayden Van Dyke win the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 7

Undefeated Authentic worked six furlongs at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., on Sunday morning, going solo under regular rider Drayden Van Dyke in 1:12.40 as Bob Baffert gave the son of Into Mischief his final major breeze for the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby.

“He went nice,” said Baffert. “He’s coming into the race in good order.” (XBTV Video)

Baffert said Authentic has been more professional since his victory in the G3 Sham Stakes Jan. 4 when the colt raced greenly down the stretch.

“I put earplugs in him before the San Felipe and he’s really settled down since then,” he said.

Authentic won the G2 San Felipe on March 7 wire to wire by 2 1/4 lengths over Honor A.P., one of his rivals in the Santa Anita Derby.

Also working for Baffert were Santa Anita Derby nominee Azul Coast, who went six furlongs in 1:13.80; Gold Cup nominee Ax Man, five furlongs in 1:01.20; and undefeated Oaks contender Gamine, a $1.8 million daughter of Into Mischief, four furlongs in 48.20.

John Shirreffs sent multiple graded stakes winner Midcourt five furlongs in 1:00.40 as he prepares for the Gold Cup.

In all there were 146 recorded works at Santa Anita Sunday morning, including 12 on the training track.
