August’s Top Queer Songs Are Giving ’90s Vibes and Pop-Punk Energy

Queer Music Monthly is a collection of fresh tunes from beloved queer musical icons and innovative new artists that have been hand-picked by Them’s editors and contributors.

This August brought us a glorious assortment of tracks from pop icons and up-and-comers alike.

Demi Lovato returned with “29,” the pop-punk tinged anthem from their upcoming album HOLY FVCK. The track’s incendiary lyrics have fans wondering whether the song are about Lovato’s age-gap teen relationship with That ’70s Show star Wilmer Valderama, who Lovato says was 29 when they first met.

Also in August, Brooklyn-based musician Fusilier released the percussive “No Words,” a song off his new EP Treason. The serpentine and mysterious track has echoes of Nine Inch Nails at their most beguiling. And Los Angeles queer Latinx chanteuse San Cha brought her eclectic genre-melding signature sound to “Deja Que El Mundo Se Prenda,” a mesmerizing track perfect for the last vestiges of the summer heat.

The wind down of summer inspired some dusty, country-inspired tracks as well. Hudson Valley’s Denitia delivered country-folk perfection with her new track, “Old Friend.” Inspired by the isolation of the pandemic, the delicate and somber song is a dreamlike meditation about nostalgia and reconnecting with old friends. Leaning more into alt-country, Mariel Buckley’s “Shooting at the Moon” is a spirited and twangy track about life on the road and long-distance romance.

As has been the trend, ‘90s nostalgia has continued apace this August. Brooklyn’s THICK brought slacker vibes with their bouncy Breeders-esque “Tell Myself,” from their new album Happy Now. Kaleena Zanders proved that it’s never too late to crown a summer anthem with “Me Without U,” a thumping, house-inspired banger. Zanders’ voice on the track is a powerful force reminiscent of house diva CeCe Peniston. And dream-pop duo Housewife shone bright with the vibrant and joyful “I’m Spent.” The swirling track conjures images of summer romance, night swimming, and melting popsicles.
