Ask Ray: Thoroughbreds At Hialeah, Missing NHC Qualifier Tracks And Split Sample Testing

In the latest installment of Ask Ray, Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick discusses the chances of a Thoroughbred racing revival at Hialeah Park in South Florida, along with the future of Calder Race Course, now operating as Gulfstream Park West.

Hialeah offers a limited menu of Quarter Horse match races during a portion of the year in order to maintain its license for a casino and poker room. The track does not have a permit for Thoroughbred racing.

Ray also speculates about why Churchill Downs Inc. racetracks are not part of the wagering menu for online NHC qualifying tournaments.

Finally, several readers have asked whether the results of split sample tests are known for the two horses from Bob Baffert’s stable that reportedly tested positive for lidocaine on the Arkansas Derby Day program at Oaklawn on May 2, including Charlatan, winner of a division of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
