Ask Bill Self and Kansas: There’s Baylor and Gonzaga and everyone else


The coach who has owned the Big 12 for the last 18 years sat on a podium in Waco, Texas, on a night when his team never really had a chance to win, and he was actually kind of pleased.

“I’ll be honest, guys, we played damn well the second half,” Bill Self said Monday after Kansas lost 77-69 to second-ranked Baylor.

This is where we are in the college basketball season. The Bears, now 13-0 and yet to win a game by fewer than eight points, are making Hall of Fame coaches count moral victories. Self, as prideful as any coach in the country, is out here acknowledging that his team is not on Baylor’s level. Or, as he put it, “Let’s not get this too twisted; Baylor is better than us right now.”

That’s not a shot at his own team. That’s the reality for all but maybe one team in college basketball: Gonzaga.
