Ashleigh Barty forced to withdraw from Eastbourne as she manages injury ahead of Wimbledon

A long-standing arm injury flared up as a result of her efforts of winning at Birmingham to climb to the top of the pile in women’s tennis.

So now her preparation for SW19 will be limited to taking inspiration from the Australia cricket team, who she plans to watch at Lord’s on Tuesday when they take on England in the World Cup.

At least she hopes it will be inspiring.

“I’ve never been to a World Cup match with the guys, so it would be great if it happened,” Barty, a former cricketer herself with Brisbane Heat, said.

“We’re going to take a few days offs and get the arm right and be ready for next week.

“It’s something I manage. It doesn’t require medication at this stage.

“It’s an injury that we’ve had to manage since I was 16 years old. When we have a spike in load, soreness comes up.

“It’s just a bone stress injury and we need to look after it.

“But I think we’ll be fine and be ready to go next week.”

Barty’s success at the Nature Valley Classic catapulted her above Naomi Osaka at the top of the world rankings.

Following her two-set victory over Julia Goerges, she admitted she was delighted to have achieved the feat.

“It’s an amazing place to be,” Barty said.

“Particularly at the French, it felt like a whirlwind.

“This week felt more like a regular week if there’s such a thing just to try and go about things the right way.

“It’s hard to put into words what we have been able to achieve over the last few years and to be where we are is just incredible.

“But certainly nothing changes now.”
