As pandemic halts Big Ten, Pac-12 play, why one Miami assistant feels safe


Todd Stroud has every reason to be worried about contracting COVID-19.

Five years ago, the 57-year-old defensive line coach was diagnosed with a cancer-like blood disease caused by a protein buildup in his organs. He was told he only had one to three years to live.

Even though Miami’s defensive line coach survived his 2015 bout with amyloidosis following six months of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, doctors have said patients with underlying or preexisting health conditions are more at risk of death from the coronavirus than those who don’t have them.

“It’s just kind of an ongoing thing that I have,” Stroud said of his health in April 2019 when he was first introduced as Miami’s new defensive line coach. “It’s kind of like Ironman. I go in for tune-ups every once in a while. And then it’s under control. It’s all good. I feel good and I’m just rocking and rolling, ready to write this…
