As AL teams improve around them, what can the Blue Jays still get done at the trade deadline?


It’s that time of year where the action on the Twitter timeline may be more riveting than the play on the field, so, in case you missed it, the Blue Jays split their doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

The Blue Jays won the first game 4-1 behind a gem of a start by Robbie Ray, who went six strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts, while Randal Grichuk and George Springer homered. The Red Sox flipped the script and won the night match 4-1. Steven Matz got through just 3 1/3 innings, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits, and Red Sox rookie Jarren Duran hit what looked like an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning but was later changed to a triple and an error on Springer in centre field.

But, if you had instead been scrolling that Twitter timeline during the games, you may have noticed that, while Wednesday was pretty busy on the trade front, with several teams exchanging players throughout the day, the Blue Jays have so far been quiet, even as teams they are chasing in the American League wild-card standings have made additions, including snatching up some of Toronto’s potential targets.
