Argentina launched a “Green Mondays” campaign this week in order to cut greenhouse gases that are produced by cattle ranching.
In an announcement posted to its website, the Environment Ministry for Argentina urged citizens to replace meals with meat with plant-based meals on Mondays in order to help Argentina combat climate change and greenhouse gases.
Cattle ranching is the biggest contributor to the country’s greenhouse emissions at 22 percent, Bloomberg reported.
The effort for “Green Mondays” would help citizens in Argentina promote environmental awareness, consume food responsibly, improve their health and tackle climate change, the ministry stated.
The Argentine Rural Society opposed the campaign after it was announced.
Beef “is a badge of national identity and a product that represents us in the world like no other,” the Argentine Rural Society said, according to Bloomberg.
Argentina has been in competition with Uruguay for the title of red-meat capital of the world.
Argentina has said they want to eliminate all their greenhouse gases by 2030.
