Are any teams good? Making sense of a weird Premier League table


Welcome to the new Premier League.

It’s the same as the old Premier League, except the stadiums are empty, the traditional “big six” aren’t leading the way together, games are seeing an extra goal on average and teams are more clustered together in the table than in recent years.

Here’s how things stand so far (before last night’s game between Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers), with most teams having played six matches.

The table definitely has that early-season feel to it. Everton and Liverpool are joint-top, with Aston Villa a point behind in third, ahead of Leicester on goal difference. Both Manchester teams are in the bottom half (albeit with a game in hand apiece on the leaders), with Chelsea and Arsenal bang in mid-table. Of the promoted sides, Leeds United have three wins so far and sit sixth, with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion on just one and three points respectively.
