APGA Tour Championship winner Kamaiu Johnson earns sponsor exemption for 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

Kamaiu Johnson, who won the 2020 APGA Tour Championship, will tee it up in San Diego in 2021 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Johnson will make his first start on the PGA Tour in January.

He found out the news during a Zoom call with Jeff Dailey, the CEO of Farmers.

“That’s life-changing,” Johnson told Dailey. “This year has been the best year of my golfing career. I couldn’t thank you guys enough.”

In September, Johnson carded a final-round 68, which included a birdie on the final hole, to win the APGA Tour Championship. He finished the season strong, posting a top 10 in all five of the final events on the APGA Tour in 2020.

The Advocates Pro Golf Association’s mission is to bring greater diversity to the sport by paving the way for African Americans and other minorities to become involved in a variety of careers in golf.

“At Farmers we value diversity and are proud to help support the APGA Tour in its mission to level the playing field for many talented golfers,” Dailey said.

Farmers hosted the first-ever APGA Tour event at a PGA Tour tournament at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open.

“Earlier this year, I said I wanted to be back at Torrey Pines but playing on the South Course and now that statement is a reality. The opportunity to play in the Farmers Insurance Open is the culmination of a lot of work that I’ve put into the game, but also the sacrifice and help from so many others. This means the world to me, to my family and to my hometown of Tallahassee,” Johnson said.
