Another big game for Barca, another defeat for Koeman. It’s harming his long-term prospects

Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat on Saturday night at Real Madrid was a big blow to their hopes of winning an unlikely La Liga title this season, and to Ronald Koeman’s chances of keeping his job past the summer.

Barca showed a lot of spirit to almost equalise in the closing seconds of what was the most entertaining Clasico of recent seasons, with a torrential rainstorm through the second half adding to the drama at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium.

But the manner in which Koeman’s side were outplayed during the first hour of the game underlined the scale of the work that needs to be done — and kept the debate very much alive about whether the Dutchman is the right man to take the team forward next season.

The Blaugrana squad travelled to the Spanish capital in excellent form and spirits.
