India’s ace golfer Anirban Lahiri slipped two places to 55th spot in world rankings as he finished tied 48 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after the tournament was reduced to 54 holes on account of inclement weather.
Lahiri, who started the year as world no. 40, will need to stay in top 60 to make it to the US Open next month or will need a special exemption from USPGA.
With quite a few tournaments lined up, Lahiri is quite likely to make the US Open, the second Major of the year.
He will, however, miss the lucrative Players Championships beginning May 21 unless he wins the Well Fargo this week. Lahiri is scheduled to tee up at the USD 7.3 million Well Fargo Championships to be held at the Quail Hollow in Charlotte.
Quail Hollow has become especially important with the 2017 PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup to be held at the same course.
In his first full season on the PGA, Lahiri has had modest results having made the cut in nine of the 12 starts starting from the CIMB Classic in Malaysia when the 2015-16 wrap-around season began.
He missed cut in only three events, but has also not finished inside top 20 in any of the official events. Lahiri’s best was tied 21 finish at CIMB after which he has been T-28 in Career Builder Challenge and the two WGC events.
With USD 446,479 in official money, he has 308 FedEx points and is placed 105th. The top 125 players will make the FedEx Finals, which begins with the Barclays and winds up with the Coca-Cola Tour Championships.
No Indian has played the FedEx Cup, which was first started in 2007.
