A disappointing finish with three bogeys over the last four holes washed away all the gains that Anirban Lahiri had made on the second day of the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.
Lahiri, who opened the week with a superb two-under 68 to be tied fifth after the first round, returned a card of four-over 74 and is now tied-22nd at two-over 142.
The conditions for scoring were tough with the fairways playing tighter and there was premium on the short game.
Lahiri had a roller coaster of a round with three birdies and seven bogeys. He was one-over for the front nine and then traded a bogey on 10th with a birdie on 13th. He was one-over for the day at that stage, before running into a stretch of three bogeys in four holes.
Lahiri has got his coach, Vijay Divecha with him this week and he is hoping it will help him over the weekend.
Jason Day of Australia used his sharp short game to get a pair of late birdies for a 1-under 69 that gave him a one-shot lead over David Lingmerth going into the weekend.
Day missed a 6-foot par putt on the last.
Day was at 4-under 136, matching Tiger Woods in 2005 for the highest 36-hole score to lead this World Golf Championships event.
Lingmerth had a 67 that tied for the low score of the second round, where scoring was hampered by wind that felt as though it were coming out of different directions.
William McGirt, who began the second round with a three-shot lead, stayed in front until he went over the par-5 16th with a wedge and made bogey, and then chopped up the 18th hole on his way to a double bogey for a 74. McGirt had a 74 and was two shots back at 138, along with Emiliano Grillo (71) and Scott Piercy (69).
