Andy Murray trolls England for 'hanging on to Euros draw' vs Scotland – but fans hit back

Andy Murray has received hundreds of angry comments from England fans after poking fun at the performance of Gareth Southgate’s side against Scotland on Friday. Murray was at Wembley Stadium to witness England’s lacklustre performance and wasn’t shy to let his feelings known after the 0-0 draw.

England put in a lethargic and disappointing display at the national stadium, rarely giving the 22,500 fans inside much to shout about.

John Stones hit the post with an early header but that was about as good as it got for the hosts, who created very little across the 90 minutes.

Scotland perhaps had the better chances, with Lyndon Dykes having a shot cleared off the line and Jordan Pickford making a strong save from Stephen O’Donnell’s powerful low volley.

The visitors came into the game as underdogs after a 2-0 defeat by the Czech Republic on Monday but put in a valiant performance against England.

Murray will soon be focusing all his attention on preparing for Wimbledon, where he has received a wildcard to play, but after watching his side play he couldn’t help himself.

“You don’t have a clue about football just like you can’t play tennis,” said one particularly angry person.

“Spot on. Thought you were the better team at times. Next target for you…..score a goal #ENGvSCO,” said another.

Murray’s brother and fellow tennis player, Jamie, made a similar joke, tweeting: “Well done England.  Didn’t think we played our best tonight but credit to England for making it difficult for  us and gaining a valuable point.”

The draw moved England onto four points from two games following the opening 1-0 win over Croatia last weekend.

Southgate’s side will now play the Czech Republic on Tuesday in their final group match to decide who tops Group D.

Scotland will face Croatia at Hampden Park needing a win to progress to the last-16.

Murray, meanwhile, will go back to training as he looks to make his mark at Wimbledon after suffering defeat by Matteo Berrettini at Queens on Thursday.
