Andy Murray singles claim made by Tim Henman after Wimbledon comeback – EXCLUSIVE

Murray has battled with injury issues over the past few years now and a tearful press conference at the 2019 Australian Open appeared to suggest he would be ready to call time on his career.

But following a successful hip operation, Murray made his return to competitive tennis late last month at Queen’s where he won the men’s doubles title alongside Feliciano Lopez.

He followed that up with a return to Wimbledon, where he competed in both the men’s and mixed doubles.

The Scot lost in the second round of the men’s doubles alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert but there was genuine excitement at seeing Murray partner Serena Williams in the mixed doubles.

The two tennis stars ultimately succumbed to No 1 seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar in the third round.

Murray however, backtracked on plans to make his singles return at the US Open next month, suggesting it could take him up to a year before he feels comfortable to compete over five sets.

But Henman believes the 32-year-old should be in no rush to make his return too quickly, urging patience from tennis fans.

“It’s just fun to see Andy back out on a match court competing and I think this is a good stepping stone for him,” he told Express Sport.

“He wants to be back out on the singles court and hopefully that’s going to be the case.

“We just have to be a bit patient and fingers crossed we can see him some point this year competing in singles.

“But he’s made huge progress from having the operation.”

He added: “He had such a rough 18 months where his hip wasn’t getting better.

“He’s doing all the work and getting no real rewards and you want to be out on the match court competing.

“Once he had the surgery to see how much better he was feeling, he was pain free, his quality of life was totally different and then he had the chance of getting back on the practice court playing pain free.

“I hit with Jamie and Andy about three or four weeks ago [before Wimbledon] and you could see he was enjoying his tennis again and he’s continued to make great strides.”
