Murray and Kyrgios have developed a strong bond over the years and the pair practiced together as the Brit was recovering from hip resurfacing surgery.
Kyrgios was in attendance for Murray’s singles return earlier this week, which ended in a defeat against Richard Gasquet.
However, the three-time Grand Slam winner has criticised his friend for his actions against Karen Khachanov.
Kyrgios was charged with five separate offences which included smashing up two rackets in a corridor and calling umpire Fergus Murphy “a tool”.
Murray revealed he spoke to the 24-year-old after his meltdown and expressed his sympathy wth the official, who had to put up with verbal abuse for the duration of the match, which ended in a Khachanov victory.
“It wasn’t good, and I felt for Fergus as he shouldn’t have to put up with that,” Murray told BBC Sport.
“I chatted to him a little bit last night after the match.
“It’s obviously up to him, and I think for the most part a couple of weeks ago in Washington [where he won his sixth ATP title], he did a good job of helping himself and using the crowd.
“But obviously this week, he went back to what he was doing before.
“You just hope he will figure it out, because a week like in Washington is really good for tennis, but last night isn’t. Hopefully he gets it figured out.”
The ATP is still considering if Kyrgios committed a “major offence” and if so he could face further punishment.
The world No 27 may be hit with another fine or even a suspension from the tour.
Kyrgios has a long history of controversial on-court antics and patience seems to be waring thin with ATP bosses.
Meanwhile, Murray is back in doubles action tonight at the Cincinnati Masters.
The 32-year-old, competing alongside Feliciano Lopez, takes on brother Jamie Murray and fellow Brit Neal Skupski.
