Andy Murray has confirmed he will miss the Australian Open after testing positive for coronvirus earlier this month. The former world No 1 was scheduled to make his return to the Australian Open for the first time since 2019 having recovered from an ongoing hip injury.
The 33-year-old competed at the US Open and French Open last year and looked in good shape to compete in Australia.
But his participation was put in major doubt earlier this month after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Murray was set to board a charterd flight but got the news of his positive test 36 hours before he was scheduled to leave.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has since been forced to self isolate at his home in London while being in constant dialogue with Australian Open officials.

“I want to thank everyone there for their efforts, I’m devastated not to be playing out in Australia – It’s a country and tournament that I love.”
Murray has reached the final of the Australian Open on more occasions than any other Grand Slam in his career but is yet to win the tournament.
Between 2010 and 2016, the Scottish tennis star reached the final five times, losing to Novak Djokovic on four occasions while Roger Federer defeated him once.
The Melbourne event is also the scene of Murray’s emotional press conference where he announced his possible retirement from the sport due to his ongoing hip issue
