Andy Murray officially confirms Citi Open plans to partner brother Jamie in doubles

Citi Open tournament director Mark Ein revealed to the New York Times last night that the Murray brothers had called the tournament to express their interest in teaming up.

“They called us and said Andy really wanted to come back to D.C., and wanted to play doubles with his brother,” he said.

“We’re putting a real focus on doubles at the event — it’s a terrific piece of the competition and entertainment value for fans — so we were thrilled he wanted to return.”

And in a video posted on Twitter, Andy has now officially confirmed that he will take to the courts in Washington next week to double up with his brother.

“I just wanted to let you know that I’m going to be competing in Washington next week in the doubles with my brother Jamie,” he said in the video.

“Obviously very excited to be on the court with him and to also to go back to Washington.

“It’s a city I’ve always enjoyed visiting so should be fun.

“Hoping to have a good summer over in the states to keep progressing physically and hopefully get out on the singles court soon.

“I’ll see you all in Washington.”

It won’t be the first time the Murray brothers will team up in the men’s doubles.

Their last competitive match alongside each other was in the 2015 Davis Cup final, where they helped guide Great Britain to victory for the first time since 1936.

They also competed at the London 2012 Olympics together, where they lost in the first round to Spanish pair David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez.

But the Murray brothers have also won titles together at the Valencia Open and Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Andy Murray is hoping to make a return to the singles courts at some point in the near future.

He suggested after his win at Queen’s alongside Lopez in the doubles that he would be targeting a return at the US Open.

However, he squashed any chances of that happening during Wimbledon.

“That strength is not going to come back in just three or four months, it could take nine or 12 months,” he said earlier this month.
