Andy Murray backed to edge Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in career after tennis retirement

Andy Murray is closing in on the end of his tennis career but he has been tipped to be successful once he walks away from the court for the very last time.

The Scot confirmed earlier this week that he will play in the new ATP Cup in January as part of his preparation for the Australian Open.

Murray underwent life-changing surgery at the start of the year and had considered retirement before going under the knife.

But now he has rekindled his love for the sport and has vowed to fight on until his body says otherwise.

Tennis broadcaster Catherine Whitaker believes there is still a career for Murray in the sport once he does decide his time has come to end.

She was asked on the Tennis Podcast, which of the big three [Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic] would make the best coach or commentator after finishing their playing career.

“If it’s four that it’s Andy Murray, clear cut,” she responded.

David Law then said: “For both?”

“Yeah, probably,” Whitaker replied.

“I mean, I don’t know what Novak Djokovic would be like in Serbian commentary, not that there’s any issue with his English at all.

“He speaks it as well as you and I do but it would obviously be a different thing.

“Yeah, I think Andy Murray in both.”

Murray is hoping to face the likes of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in the coming months as he builds his strength back on the court.

“For years… I competed against them, although I haven’t won every time,” Murray told Sky Sports.

“I’ve lost more than I’ve won but I always went out onto court feeling I could win.

“I don’t know if I’d enjoy going out on the court against them knowing I’m going to lose or feeling like I had no chance.

“That would probably be psychologically challenging. I need to be patient and not expect too much too soon.

“But maybe in four or five months, I can get there. In terms of how I’m hitting the ball in practice – the skill is still there.

“I physically need to get a little better and hopefully over time I get a little bit faster. I think I will.”
