There are very few people in the world who could write a check for an NFL team without having to raise funds, but the founder of Amazon is certainly one of them. And if a team should come on the market, he could make the bidding process a short one.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is currently the wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of more than $110 billion, is interested in purchasing an NFL team, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. While no teams are currently for sale, Bezos has strong support within the league and would be able to easily pay cash for a franchise without needing any outside funding.
Bezos owns the Washington Post and is in the process of moving to the nation’s capital. La Canfora notes that he has spent “considerable time” with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who has been trying to build a new facility for the team in DC to replace FedEx Field. Amazon is setting up a new hub in the area, and there’s a belief that Bezos could assist Snyder in getting a new stadium built.
The Seattle Seahawks are expected to be sold shortly after owner Paul Allen passed away last year. Bezos will be heavily tied to the team if and when that happens.
Amazon has streaming deals with the NFL and works with other sports on its “All or Nothing” franchise. Bezos was also spotted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony earlier this year, so he has become more visible around the league in recent months.
