Alexander Zverev cries in emotional US Open tribute to parents after Dominic Thiem defeat

Alexander Zverev was left in tears after losing the US Open in a gruelling four-hour battle with Dominic Thiem in New York. Zverev threw away a two-set lead in his first grand slam final, and afterwards choked back tears while discussing the defeat.

Zverev put in the performance of a lifetime at Flushing Meadows and was unlucky to not come away with the title.

The German youngster rose to the occasion of his first grand slam final and raced to an early lead, breaking Thiem in the opening set.

He followed that up by doing the same in the second as he looked set to put the match out of sight.

But the pressure – and fatigue of the epic match – got to him in the latter stages, and he started making unforced errors in crucial moments.

Despite Zverev’s impressive performance, Thiem was able to take advantage of the errors and put himself back into contention by winning the third set, before breezing through the fourth to level the match.

The 23-year-old had a resurgence in the fifth set, and at one point appeared to be back in control of proceedings.

But again, he fell victim to his own unforced errors and was no match for Thiem, who was also putting in a career-best showing.

In the tiebreak, neither player could move with any real freedom due to fatigue, and it was Thiem who saw out the match with some impressive shots.

The newly-crowned champion said: “We made great things happen on the court and off the court.

“I wish we could have two winners today.

“We both deserved it.

“You’re going to make it, 100%, make your parents proud.”
