They didn’t know each other three years ago when they deplaned at the same time in Helena, Mont. They then lived with the same host family for rookie baseball, becoming fast friends, learning one another’s affinity for hockey. Since then, they have played together at three other minor-league stops. Over the summer, they pitched at the Brewers’ alternate site in Appleton, Wis., as members of the team’s player pool.

And last week, they were added to the Brewers’ 40-man roster. 

Alec Bettinger and Dylan File, both right-handers, have similar journeys. Bettinger was a 10th round pick in 2017, and the Brewers selected File 11 rounds later. Despite lacking the buzz of early-round picks or top prospects, they were placed on the 40-man roster, protected from the Rule 5 draft, because of how they’ve developed in the Brewers’ farm system. And that’s when the stories start to slightly differ.
