ALCS: Red Sox’s J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers hit grand slams in first 2 innings

The Boston Red Sox became the first team to hit multiple grand slams in one playoff game. And it took them just two innings.

J.D. Martinez hit an opposite-field grand slam in the top of the first inning, and Rafael Devers pulled a pitch over the right-field wall five batters into the second as Boston took an 8-0 lead early in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday. The Red Sox scored eight runs on only five hits, taking advantage of three walks in the first two frames.

The grand slams came off two different pitchers after Astros starter Luis Garcia exited one batter into the second inning, throwing just 33 pitches. A Houston trainer visited the pitcher and accompanied him off the mound after he walked Kevin Plawecki to start the second inning, Garcia’s third walk of the game.

Garcia finished the outing with just an inning in the box score, striking out two batters and giving up two hits. Jake Odorizzi replaced Garcia but allowed singles to Christian Arroyo and Kiké Hernandez before Devers’ slam.

The Astros lead the series after winning Game 1 5-4 on Friday.
