MSNBC’s Al Sharpton said Friday morning that Democrats need to wake up and start talking about “kitchen-table issues” before President Trump swoops in and wins reelection on a strong economy.
Mr. Sharpton said on “Morning Joe” that while he supports the impeachment of Mr. Trump, he’s worried that Democrats are forgetting that the election will be more about “me, my house, food on my table, my kids’ tuition” than Washington politics.
“I think voters really that are struggling, which are a lot of the base of the Democratic Party, are really trying to deal with kitchen-table issues,” he said. “That’s what we’ve got to address, particularly while you have a president that’s bragging about the economy. Right now, we cannot say with any comfort that Donald Trump would not be reelected. That should make us uncomfortable.”
Mr. Sharpton also warned Democrats against instituting party purity tests ahead of the election and said the party needs to quickly reach a consensus on who would be the best “centrist” candidate to beat Mr. Trump.
“These purist tests are what led to Donald Trump in the first place and you can’t repeat the same mistakes,” he said.
