SAN DIEGO — Daniel Camarena grew up in San Diego County and attended high school 20 miles north of Petco Park. On Saturday, he made his major-league debut with his hometown team at the downtown stadium he used to frequent as a fan. He retired eight Cincinnati Reds in front of a raucous crowd speckled with family and friends. He later compared the volume in the building to what he once witnessed at a World Baseball Classic game here between Japan and South Korea.
“That game was so loud,” Camarena said. “It was incredible.”
On Saturday, more than a decade later, the Padres approximated such an environment. For the third time this season, they played in front of a full-capacity audience. They welcomed the noise and won, as they had the prior two days.
