Adam Silver consolidates significant power with new anti-tampering regime


Adam Silver has made his power move.

Replacing a predecessor who often ruled with an iron fist, the Silver administration has championed open communication, embracing reform and, perhaps inadvertently, decentralizing power to the teams. But the league faced a pivot point this summer with how it chose to respond to an unprecedented lifting of the tampering flood gates, which were nudged open by Silver when the Lakers hardly suffered after being found guilty in the Paul George tampering investigation.

Silver’s response was significant power consolidation, putting forth relatively open-ended proposal to overhaul the league’s tampering regulations. The bill was passed by the Board of Governors Friday, since nobody was interested in dissenting and putting a target on their back come audit time. That was more apparent than ever when Silver admitted in his press conference Friday that fines may not cut it anymore.
