A Texas Church Put on an Illegal Hamilton Show with an Anti-LGBTQ+ Sermon

Pretty sure no one wants to be in the room where this happens. A Texas church decided that, despite not being able to obtain the rights to the hit show Hamilton, they would put the show on anyway, and add an anti-LGBTQ+ sermon to the end for good measure.

The Door Christian Fellowship McAllen Church in the southern Texas town of McAllen put on what can only be called a Vacation Bible School-ified production of Hamilton last week, as first reported by theatre blog OnStage. The production appears to have altered the text of the play to be about the titular Alexander Hamilton coming to Jesus, with bangers such as “What is a legacy? / It’s knowing you repented and accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ that sets men free.”

A journalist from the secular news site OnlySky Media, which has also been following the story, tweeted out snippets from the show and the lecture that came at the end.

The production was also followed by a 15-minute sermon, during which a pastor claimed that God wanted to help the audience with their sins, including alcohol, drugs, and homosexuality.
