How Fire Threatened California’s Sequoias
One of the wildfires, the Windy fire, burned nine of the 33 groves in the Sequoia National Forest, said Denise Alonzo, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.
To a lesser extent, the fire also infiltrated sequoia groves in the Tule River Reservation, where the burning and thinning of underbrush is used as a forest management method.
“That is what saved a lot of sequoias on the tribal side,” said Monte Kawahara, a firefighter.
