Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pneumatic, a homebred son of Uncle Mo, was nominated to the Triple Crown this week, reports the Daily Racing Form. The 3-year-old was most recently third in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs, and could next appear in either the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on June 20 or the Grade 1 Haskell on July 18.
Both races offer points toward the rescheduled Kentucky Derby, booked for Sept. 5 beneath the Twin Spires. Due to the delay brought on by the global coronavirus pandemic, the Triple Crown nomination deadline was pushed back to this Wednesday, June 3, and the late fee halved from $6,000 to $3,000.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pneumatic broke his maiden at first asking at Oaklawn in February, and followed that up with an allowance win before making his stakes debut at Churchill on May 23. The colt, descended from Vern Winchell’s foundation mare Carols Christmas, breezed for the first time since the Matt Winn on Monday, covering five furlongs in 1:02.20 at Churchill.
“I’m pleased with how he’s come out of the race,” Asmussen told drf.com.
