Strategic Planning Session: The Athletic analysts examine the buyers, sellers, and player fits ahead of the deadline


Editor’s Note: Below is a conversation between three of The Athletic’s NBA analysts with different specialties. Seth Partnow (analytics), Sam Vecenie (NBA draft/scouting) and Danny Leroux (CBA/Salary cap) discuss and break down the current state of the NBA trade market ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline, from a team-building perspective, applying their expertise to trade scenarios.

Vecenie: Danny and Seth, good to hear from you again. We’re officially a week out from the trade deadline, so I think this would be a good time to just reset the marketplace as teams get down to brass tacks in making deals.

To do that, let’s establish a structure. First, we’ll talk about teams that we think should be buying. Then, we’ll talk about what teams should be willing to sell. And we’ll close by bringing up specific names and discussing their potential to move on deadline…
