We will see some extremely rare and desirable vehicles cross the block when RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale auctions get started later today. The company has one of the most impressive dockets of any auction this week, which will surely bring some equally impressive sale prices along with it. A few cars, though, are poster-worthy legends that are so cool and so rare that anyone with even a passing interest in automobiles will recognize them. These cars combine impressive performance, extremely low production numbers, and bold styling in a way that very few other vehicles can, earning them a spot on our list.
Here are three of the most desirable cars from RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale auction catalog:
Senna
McLaren took a risk by naming their car after Ayrton Senna, one of the best and most legendary racing drivers of all time, but the machine they created is so good that it more than lives up to its name. The Senna is an absolute masterpiece of a supercar with the breathtaking performance numbers to match. The car’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 produces 789 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, all of which adds up to a 0-60 mph time of just 2.8 seconds. Further increasing the Senna’s desirability is the fact that McLaren only made 500 of them. This car, numbered 87, has a special MSO Gulf Livery – a $193,941 option. That sounds crazy (it is), but it’s not that far out of line when you consider that the car’s expected auction sale price will reach up to $1.25 million.
W8
The Vector W8 is an outrageous car, even by the over-the-top standards of other supercars from its time like the Lamborghini Countach. The Vector company only made the cars for a few years in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and production numbers reached just 22 units over that time. The interior is filled with futuristic jet fighter screens, and the whole thing gives off a strong “space-shippy” vibe. Performance is respectable and even compares favorably against fast cars from today. The twin-turbo V-8 produced 650 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque when the car was new, which should be good enough to push the W8 to 60 mph from a standstill in just over 4 seconds. The Vector’s rarity and future-funk styling are expected to nudge its auction price to nearly half a million dollars.
Miura
The Miura is regarded by many people as the most beautiful Lamborghini ever made, and it’s easy to see why. Most of the Italian automaker’s cars are designed with sharp angles and hard lines today, but back in the 70’s the company’s designs were filled with curvy sheet metal and flowing lines. Power comes from a V-12 engine that made around 380 hp when it was new in 1971. Only 764 of the cars were produced over its seven-year run, making them extremely desirable. This car has had three owners from new, but the current owner has had it for nearly 40 years. Even though its original Miura Green factory color was resprayed to the orange we see here, this Lamborghini should go for up to $1.6 million.
