The Seven Deadly Sins As Video Games – TheGamer

The Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Greed, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth. We have all heard these names at least once. Rooted in Christian moral teachings, they represent the main flaws of the human soul. They’ve existed for millennia, dating back to ancient times, even before Christianity, all the way to Ancient Greece. Over time, these sins have evolved in different forms, from Dante’s Divine Comedy to modern interpretations like Fullmetal Alchemist and The Seven Deadly Sins.

8 Best Games About Corporate Greed

Here are the best video games that focus on corporate greed!

But now, the real question is: what if the Seven Deadly Sins were represented by video games? Here are seven video games that best represent each of these infamous sins.

This list contains spoilers for various video games, including Doki Doki Literature Club! The Last Of Us Part 2, and Red Dead Redemption 2. If you haven’t played these games yet, proceed with caution!

7 God Of War (2018)

Pride

Kratos, the God of War himself, is practically the walking embodiment of pride. We are talking about a punch-the-gods-in-the-face kind of pride. His inability to access his past and his continuous battle with the Gods demonstrate the blind pride that leads him to commit devastating actions.

His pride pushes him to defy not just one mythology, but two. Whether they’re the Greek or Norse gods, Kratos is unstoppable. Even when he tries to leave his violent past behind, his need to protect his son, Atreus, leads him to make irreversible decisions. God of War perfectly represents the internal battle against pride and Kratos’ long and painful search for redemption.

6 The Last Of Us Part 2

Wrath

If ever there was a game that captured pure wrath, it’s The Last Of Us Part 2. Ellie’s journey is a spiral of rage-fueled vengeance, with her anger consuming everything and everyone around her. Like the souls in Dante’s Inferno wandering in a cloud of smoke, Ellie is blinded by her fury, unable to see the destruction she’s leaving behind. Her desire for revenge only furthers her from the people she cares about.

The Last Of Us Part 3 Should Be All About Abby

Abby and Lev should take the spotlight over Ellie this time around.

In the first game, she was sunny, funny, and full of life. But Joel’s profound loss becomes the spark that fuels an endless cycle of vengeance. In the end, Ellie finally breaks that cycle, but at the cost of being left alone.

5 Doki Doki Literature Club!

Envy

At first glance, Doki Doki Literature Club! appears to be a cute high school literature club sim. However, as you dive deeper, it’s clear this game is a psychological horror with an unsettling narrative, and no character better represents envy than Monika.

Monika knows she’s not an available romance option, and that awareness consumes her. She breaks the fourth wall to make you, the player, her one true love. Envy drives her to horrifying actions, including literally deleting her competitors from the game’s files. Her jealousy reaches a point where you, not the protagonist, but you, the person behind the screen, are the only “real” thing in her simulated world. Let’s just say she’s a bit of a red flag…

4 The Longing

Sloth

The Longing perfectly captures the concept of sloth, and it targets you, the player. You control Shade, a small creature tasked by its king to wait 400 days for his awakening. Yes, that’s 400 REAL days. With no clear objective and zero interaction with other living beings, you are left to wander through dark, empty caves at a snail’s pace.

Everything in this game moves slowly. Exploration? Slow. The pace of movement? Slower. Even interactions with the world take an eternity. Apathy is built into the core mechanics, forcing you to decide how to spend your time. Let us know in a year how it went.

3 Little Nightmares

Gluttony

Few games capture gluttony in such a grotesque manner as Little Nightmares. From its disturbing atmosphere to the themes of unbridled consumption that dominate the world, gluttony is present at every corner.

The Maw is the perfect representation of this sin, being a ship full of grotesque, giant deformed guests who constantly gorge themselves, eating everything in sight. Six, the game’s protagonist, is not immune to gluttony either. Her hunger becomes more insatiable and disturbing as the game progresses, culminating in a shocking moment that highlights the darker aspects of human nature.

2 Red Dead Redemption 2

Greed

In Red Dead Redemption 2, greed is the force that leads to the downfall of almost every character, Arthur Morgan included. The Dutch van der Linde gang starts with what they think are noble intentions, but greed and the pursuit of wealth soon take over.
