U.S. Women's Teams Split Day 2 Action Against Canada

Callie Shanahan (Commerce Township, Mich.) stopped 18 of 19 shots in a 4-1 U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team win over Canada. Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) was credited with the primary assist on Team USA’s first two goals, including the eventual game-winner.

“We had great momentum in the third period yesterday that helped us to a quick start today, and after working on things on video, the team did a great job of executing the game plan tonight,” said Allison Coomey (State College, Pa.), head coach of the Collegiate Select Team. “We’ll get some rest tomorrow, practice and watch some video, and re-group ahead of Saturday.”

The U.S. forecheck forced a turnover deep into Canada’s own zone, and Maureen Murphy dished out a backhand pass that was hammered home by Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Ill.) to open the game. Team USA doubled its lead with another great pass into the front of the net that Britta Curl (Bismark, N.D.) one-timed in, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead 6:21 into the first.
