“8 out of 10 Americans Support Restrictions on Abortion”: March for Life Ad Airs Before Democrat Primary Debates

Before the first Democratic presidential primary debate on MSNBC Wednesday night, March for Life aired a commercial revealing that the party’s extreme positions on abortion are far from American’s consensus.

Relying on poll data from Marist Institute for Public Opinion on behalf of the pro-life Catholic fraternal organization Knights of Columbus, the minute-long commercial titled “Consensus” explains that 8 out of 10 Americans “support restrictions on abortion.”

The diverse group of women featured in the ad blame politicians for listening to pro-abortion lobbyists and a vocal minority instead of Americans. According to the commercial, only 13% of people support unrestricted access to abortion.

“These pro-choice politicians listen to them, not us,” the commercial said.

The poll asked 1,000 people across the U.S. in February for their opinions on abortion. According to the Daily Caller, the poll found that not only do Americans oppose funding abortions in the U.S., but also abroad too, including 56% of Democrats.

The women in the ad explained that 6 out of 10 Americans who claim to be pro-choice responded that “abortion should happen only during the first three months of pregnancy.” The ad continued to share that consensus across the country is that there should be “real legal limits” on abortion.

The video concludes with a call to action. “It’s time for this extremism to end,” one woman says.

“It’s time for OUR voices to be heard,” added another.

“It’s time for politicians to stop working for the pro-abortion lobby,” said a third.

“And join the national consensus,” concludes the fourth.

The ad, which was aired an hour before the primary, cost the nonprofit six figures. “Over a decade of research demonstrates how out of touch the Democratic Party establishment has become with Democratic voters when it comes to abortion,” March for Life president Jeanne Mancini said in a statement. “The Democratic establishment would do well to listen to the American people — or even just their base — instead of caving into the pressure of the abortion lobby.”

Democratic presidential candidates have been outspoken on the issue of abortion as election season begins. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren created an action plan on abortion to create federal statutory rights to protect the ruling in Roe v. Wade.

California Sen. Kamala Harris has stated that if elected, she would require states that have been restrictive with abortion to seek approval from her Justice Department before passing anymore abortion-related laws.

And, Democratic candidate front-runner Joe Biden has waffled on his opinion of the Hyde Amendment, which restricts taxpayer funding for abortion, finally landing on rescinding his support. Although as a Roman Catholic, he has struggled with the abortion issue, he expressed at a fundraising event recently that “circumstances have changed.”
