5 Must-See Southern Destinations

5 Must-See Southern Destinations

For a lot of people, taking a vacation generally means going to places like Los Angeles, New York City, or skiing in Colorado. While those destinations are great of course, there are quite a few places down south that you really should visit.

With United Airlines ramping up domestic flights and cooler weather prevailing, it’s also a perfect time to visit that part of the country. Even if you live down south, there are a lot of must-see destinations that you likely haven’t seen yet.

So, we wanted to put together a list of places in the south that are almost too good to pass up.

1. Charlotte, North Carolina

If you’re into sports, those ramped-up flights to Charlotte, NC could be your ride to a cornucopia of fun at Freedom Park. This 98 acre destination has batting cages, four baseball fields, two volleyball courts, 12 tennis courts, four soccer fields, a full-sized basketball court, walking trails and paths, and a 7 acre lake that’s perfect for fishing and skiing.

2. Ginnie Springs, Florida

If you love the water, the shockingly crystal clear, blue water that is a consistent 72 degree Fahrenheit will make you feel as if you have entered paradise. Furthermore, there are numerous caves for experienced scuba divers to explore, making this one of our must-see destinations.

3. Jacob’s Well, Texas

Located an hour southwest of the hotels in Austin, Texas, Jacob’s Well is Texas’ second-largest completely submerged cave, where the water is a constant 68 degrees. It’s the perfect place for cooling off from the Texas summer, but there is a fee to do so and you have to reserve your time in advance.

4. Stephens Gap, Alabama

This is one of the most photographed caves in the country and is a very cool place to visit if you love to explore natural wonders. Stephens Gap has two entrances, one for those wanting to explore the moderately difficult mile and a half round trip hike, and one for people who are trained in repelling.

However, the biggest must-see here is the waterfall that cascades into a deep pit.

Another sight that you have to see is the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro. This is the only American store that buys and sells unclaimed baggage from airlines and they have thousands of new items daily.

5. New Orleans, Louisiana

No list like this would be complete without recommending The Big Easy. Sure, Adele might be rumored to be starting a Vegas residency that a lot of people are going to count as a must-see—but let’s be honest, New Orleans is on the bucket list of adults of all ages.

Even excluding Bourbon Street, there are a lot of places there that you really should visit. Tours range all the way from seeing historical homes like the Longue Vue House and Gardens to Witches Brew Tours, the #1 haunted ghost, voodoo, and vampire tour in the city.

You also can’t miss experiencing the Mississippi River aboard the Steamboat Natchez evening jazz cruise. With dinner and drink options, it can be a perfect evening. However, just in case it’s your new favorite soda, you might want to check ahead to see if Cracker Jack flavored Pepsi will be available.

Truth be told, the south has a good portion of must-see destinations, but these were the ones that really caught our eye today. If you’ve been contemplating a getaway, one of the above cities might end up being the perfect choice.

When you do visit, remember that “southern hospitality” is indeed a real thing. Don’t be afraid to ask locals where some other great sights are. Sometimes, the best features of a city are off the beaten path.
