337K affected by power outage in Puerto Rico

More than 337,000 customers in Puerto Rico experienced power failure Wednesday night after three units went out of service without warning.

Luma Energy, which took over Puerto Rico’s power system on June 1, first announced on Twitter that two units were suddenly out of service before shortly adding that a third had been affected. Luma did specify why the units stopped working.

The company tweeted on Thursday morning that “by 11:57 pm LUMA had restored service to all customers affected by last night’s build events.”

According to the island’s energy company, Luma initially believed that the outage affected 190,000 customers and later revised that count to more than 337,000 customers. Luma confirmed to The Associated Press that outages were not related to planned interruptions in service.

This is the second time that customers have experience power failure since Luma took on its new role. Last week, a fire at a substation left 900,000 without power at the height of the outage. Additionally the company also faced a cybersecurity attack, which made it difficult for customers to reach Luma during the outage.

The Hill has reached out to Luma for comment.
