Tony Finau hasn’t won since the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, his lone PGA Tour victory. He’s finished runner-up six times since. He’s finished in the top 10 34 times since, the most top 10s without a win on Tour.
He knows. He knows. He knows!
“Yeah, it is tiring, but I kind of welcome that challenge,” Finau said Saturday when asked if he’s tired of being asked about his drought. “I have for the last couple seasons. What I mean by that is I challenge myself every time I play to prove that I can do it again, and I know I can. I’ve got, I feel like the skill set’s good, at a high level. I’m going to have a lot of opportunities to win tournaments. That’s to me what the exciting thing is.
“Every time I don’t close a tournament, I’m never thinking, ‘Wow, I let another one slip. I’m never going to have this opportunity again.’ For me, it’s like, ‘What did I learn? How can I take what I learned into the next opportunity?’ And I’ve got another opportunity tomorrow.”
Sunday, Finau enters the final round of the American Express at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., tied for the lead, at 15 under, with Max Homa and Si Woo Kim, and together they’ll tee off last, at 2 p.m. ET. Richy Werenski is a shot back, and he tees off with two of three players who are two shots back at 1:50.
During the third round, Finau double-bogeyed the par-3 13th hole. Then birdied 14, 15 and 16 for a five-under 67. Homa shot a 65, the day’s second-best round, while Kim had a bogey-free 67.
“I’ve got a great chance to win this thing tomorrow,” Finau said. “That’s exciting. It’s always exciting. I’ve had a lot of opportunities, some lessons that I’ve learned from in the past, maybe it will pay off tomorrow and get a W. I’m playing some solid golf, putter feels good, so we’ll have a shot at this thing tomorrow.”
